Stop Illegal Hiring Launches Campaign to Target Employers Who Hire Illegal Immigrants and Offers Tough New Penalties Against I.D. Theft and the All-Cash, Underground Economy

Former federal and county prosecutor Andrew Pacheco to chair campaign

PHOENIX – The fight against illegal immigration in Arizona gained a boost on Tuesday with the filing of a tough ballot initiative aimed at stopping employers from hiring illegal immigrants and cracking down on the underground all-cash economy and identity theft rings that lure undocumented workers to the state.

Andrew Pacheco, a former federal prosecutor and deputy Maricopa County attorney will chair the campaign known as Stop Illegal Hiring.

The Stop Illegal Hiring initiative strengthens current state law by giving law enforcement the tools they need to target those employers who attempt to dodge state and federal hiring laws by paying their employees in cash, who fail to collect sales tax, or who don’t withhold payroll taxes.

“The Stop Illegal Hiring initiative puts unscrupulous employers on notice that they won’t be able to hire an illegal workforce by paying them illegally in cash,” Pacheco said.  “This law will target those employers who, for too long, have been getting away with breaking the law.”

The initiative directs fines collected by the attorney general from lawbreaking employers to the Arizona Department of Education and the Arizona Department of Health for distribution to school districts and emergency room providers to offset the costs associated with illegal immigration.

Stop Illegal Hiring also gets tough on identity theft. Stolen identities are often used by illegal aliens to conceal their undocumented status from hiring managers.

“Stop Illegal Hiring creates tougher penalties against a person who steals someone’s identity as a way of illegally gaining employment. We take away a major tool used by illegal immigrants to sneak their way past hiring managers,” Pacheco said.

Pacheco expects to campaign across the state with his message of a tough, enforceable and fair way to fight illegal immigration.

“Illegal immigration affects every corner of Arizona,” Pacheco said. “We have a crisis in our state and country that needs our immediate attention. I believe that this is the toughest law allowed by the United States Constitution. It is tough and fair”
